Sanctuary Woods

In 2005, Arboreal Tree Care was employed to carry out tree assessments for more than 650 native trees that were previously surveyed and existed on a large landholding in Falcon.  The area was a sensitive one as there existed a natural spring and Aboriginal land which was not to be upset.

The owner wanted to know the species, health and viability of these trees for consideration to developing their building plans and consequently the land. All trees were assessed using a (ATC) visual tree inspection form. The basis of inspections by Arboreal Tree Care included:

  • Overall health and vigor
  • Structural growth/defects
  • Location to proposed excavation and buildings (trunk, canopy and root zone as best made out from maps and pegs)
  • Pest and or disease infestation
  • Fauna inhabitance
  • Suitability for the proposed urban environment based on species selection
  • Any maintenance required to make the tree safe as well as provide access for machinery during development, minimizing tree damage.

Recommendations were given on how to best preserve and manage the trees suitable for incorporating into the proposed development.

All trees being preserved were inspected for fauna inhabitance and they were relocated as necessary to ensure their survival. Tree protection zones were then established and these trees were then pruned to raise crowns, remove dead wood, make safe and as importantly visually aesthetic.

In an area designated for a child care centre, there were two mature Marri trees that were ideal shade, fauna and feature species to be preserved. It was identified from the assessments carried out that these trees had some structural concerns in the basal area which may impact on the safety of the children. ATC installed chain bracing systems into these trees to alleviate these concerns and preserve the trees in a safer manner.

ATC was employed continually throughout the development over several years to consult and carry out recommendations in order to help incorporate the ongoing new buildings and services.
